Absorb and Redirect

One of the central ideas of Tai Chi Pickleball is simple:

Don't meet force with force. Absorb and redirect.

When an opponent brings pace into the game, your first instinct may be to give that pace right back.

A harder ball comes at you, so you hit a harder ball.

An opponent attacks, so you attack back.

The game becomes a contest of who can hit harder.

Tai Chi Pickleball offers another choice.

Absorb the force. Redirect it.

Absorb

To absorb is to accept what the opponent has given you rather than fight against it.

A hard shot already has energy.

You don't necessarily need to create more.

Instead, you learn to use the pace that is already coming at you and control what happens to it next.

This requires calmness.

If you panic, you fight the ball.

If you stay balanced and composed, you can receive the ball, control it, and decide where you want it to go.

Redirect

Once you have absorbed the force, you can redirect it.

The direction doesn't have to be back where it came from.

You can change the angle.

You can change the direction.

You can change the pace.

You can turn your opponent's aggression into an opportunity to change the situation.

That is the idea behind Absorb and Redirect.

You aren't trying to overpower what is coming at you.

You are using what is coming at you.

The Power of Not Fighting

This doesn't mean you should never fight for a ball or never hit an aggressive shot.

It means you don't automatically respond to force with more force.

Sometimes the strongest response is the one that requires the least force.

The opponent supplies the energy.

A hard drive can become a controlled reset.

An aggressive shot can become an opportunity to change direction.

An opponent's pressure can become an opportunity for you to regain control of the rally.

You decide what to do with it.

This is more than a technique.

It is a way of approaching the game.

Stay balanced.

Stay calm.

Receive what the game gives you.

Then redirect it toward a better situation.

Absorb and Redirect.
