Coaching Philosophy
Coaching isn't about telling a player what to do.
It's about helping a player discover what is wrong, understand why it is wrong, and find a way to solve it.
Sometimes the problem is physical. Sometimes it is mental. And sometimes the player simply doesn't see what is actually happening.
That's where the coach's educated eye becomes important.
Find the Problem
I'm usually looking for the easiest thing I can fix.
It may not be the biggest problem the player has. But sometimes fixing one simple issue starts a cascade of improvements. Like dominoes, fixing one piece of the chain can cause several other problems to disappear.
The goal isn't to change everything at once.
It's to find the point that matters.
Teach the Why
I believe a player needs to understand why they are being asked to do something.
Simply telling a player how to perform a technique gives them an instruction. Understanding why gives them motivation and a destination.
When a player understands where they're going and why they're going there, they have something to work toward rather than simply something to imitate.
That understanding also helps them recognize the situation when it appears in a game.
