Clinics
There’s More to a Clinic Than Hitting the Ball.
An IT Guy Pickleball clinic is about learning to recognize what is happening on the court, understand the information the game is giving you, and use that information to decide what to do next.
The goal is not simply to become better at hitting the ball. It is to become better at playing the game.

A Different Way to Learn
Rather than introducing a technique and simply repeating it, an ITGPB clinic explores the situation in which that technique might be used.
What should you notice? Why does it matter? What might happen next?
Observe → Anticipate → Act → Observe Again
The game itself becomes part of the teacher.
Learn What to Look For
Situational Awareness begins with learning to recognize information that is already available.
Read the Player → Read the Paddle → Read the Ball
Where is your opponent? Are they balanced? How are they moving? What is their paddle doing? What can the pace, direction, height and trajectory of the ball tell you?
The objective is not to memorize a checklist. It is to begin seeing developing situations sooner.
Build the Picture
As situations are experienced repeatedly, players begin developing Mental Representations—recognizable pictures of situations they have encountered before.
Instead of simply: Ball comes → React, the process begins to become: I’ve seen this before → I recognize what is developing → I have more time to respond.
Experience creates recognition. Recognition can buy you time.
Beat the ball to the bounce.
Don’t Fight the Game
Tai Chi Pickleball brings another perspective to the learning process:
Stay balanced. Stay aware.
Don’t meet force with force.
Absorb and redirect.
Sometimes the appropriate response is not to attack. It may be to probe, absorb pace, redirect the ball, improve your position, or patiently wait for the situation to change.
The situation determines the tool.
Experience It
Concepts move through a progression:
Recognize → Understand → Experience → Apply
Players first explore a situation in a controlled environment. Variables are gradually introduced until the same concept begins appearing in more realistic play.
The drill isn’t the destination. Recognition is.
Failure Is Information
Not every ball should work.
A missed ball creates another opportunity to observe, understand and adjust.
What did you see? What changed? What was the paddle telling you? When did you recognize it?
Every experience adds information that can help build the next mental representation.
From Clinic to Court
The objective is not simply to leave a clinic saying: “I learned a new shot.”
It is to begin leaving the court saying: “I saw what was happening.”
That is the beginning of becoming a Learning Player—someone who can continue learning long after the clinic is over.
You can learn how to play pickleball by playing pickleball—if you know what to look for.
